Science
At James Watt Primary School Science is about children developing a sense of enquiry and extending their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Our aims are to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. To develop the children’s understanding of nature, processes, methods of science and the uses and implications of science. All topics are planned to include real life applications of the science being learnt. We use a range of teaching methods in science lessons, with an emphasis on providing a curriculum which develops and extends the children’s scientific concepts and enables them to be curious about the world. This will lead to children learning to work scientifically and Science lessons that focus on subject knowledge as well as investigative skills.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage all subjects are taught in a cross curricular way. Science is taught in relation to ‘Understanding of the World’. Children are encouraged to practically explore, question and develop an understanding of basic physical and life processes.
